Position Description

Grainger is looking for a Senior Generative Research Specialist to help define and grow the generative research activities within the eCommerce User Experience Research department. This individual will be responsible for working with business partners to operationalize a recurring system of generative and contextual customer research that will provide deep insight into Grainger’s customers. The outcome of this work will help identify innovative new opportunities to support Grainger’s eCommerce cross-platform roadmap.

Must demonstrate strong ability to institute processes across an organization, as well as solid networking and conflict resolution skills. Successful candidates will be able to balance the competing needs of many organizational stakeholders, in addition to having a solid track record of contextual research experience. This position will not have any direct reports, but will lead a project team of multiple researchers.

Primary Function
Plan and conduct research to inform the direction of Grainger’s user experience designs across multiple ecommerce platforms. Lead all aspects of research engagements from planning and scoping through to completion

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
• Independently plan, scope and carry out research activities.
• Work directly with ecommerce business partners to understand business needs and plan research accordingly.
• Demonstrated ability to work within multiple research methodologies, including but not limited to:
o Contextual inquiry
o Interviewing
o Formal usability studies
o Directional and preference testing (qualitative and quantitative)
o VOC data analysis (qualitative and quantitative)
o Taxonomy research (card sorting, tree testing, etc.)
o Literature reviews
• Balance competing deadlines, business partners, project work and priorities.
• Create compelling reports and deliverables that are comprehensive yet brief, and that help facilitate decision-making.
• Demonstrate advanced and confident communication and decision-making skills, both verbal and visual.

Position Requirements

Preferred Education & Experience
• 6+ years of experience
• Degree in anthropology, sociology, human factors, psychology, cognitive science, ergonomics, design, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
• Experience in both Ecommerce and B2B environments preferred, experience in at least one area is required.

Work Environment
• Job is based in downtown Chicago; we offer an informal and collaborative work environment.
• Travel to the Lake Forest, IL office is required, typically twice per week.
• Overnight travel: up to 20%, likely to be much lower.

Impact
• Plans and leads research engagements.
• Establishes essential connections between data and insights, helping to optimize and shape the direction of Grainger’s ecommerce platforms.
• Serves as a thought leader to advance the user experience research practice.

Working Relationships
• Partner with and support other UX researchers, as well as UX architects, designers and front-end developers.
• Collaborate with product line managers, technical product managers and other ecommerce team members on functional projects.
